Love you Bruce!! ♥magic♥magic♥magic♥magic♥

Mulle tapahtui jotain sielussa Meet in The Cityn alkaessa, jota en pysty selittään. Ja samalla fiiliksella mentiin aina She's the One'iin asti.

Bruce Springsteen at Ullevi Stadium, Sweden, Saturday July 23rd, 2016
or
Meet Me in the Gothenburg City Tonight

Ullevi, the stadium Bruce once broke (yes, that really happened in 1985, just check Wikipedia or any other source if you don't believe), always gets good shows and often something special. As I couldn't make it to the two Ullevi shows in June, I just had to be there for the third show. Perhaps we get more River songs than in the two shows I had seen on this tour, Berlin and Copenhagen in June, and what if we get Jackson Cage this time? Perhaps an outtake, or a tour premiere! High hopes, but the previous shows had had excellent setlists and one never knows what will happen.

No queueing for days this time, as I arrived to Gothenburg only on the morning of the show day. There were about 10 This Hard Land forum members on that morning flight from Finland, and 4 of us went straight to Ullevi to get numbers. Number 506 for me, and with that I can get either to front part of pit, or have a good place at back fence of pit. Latter was my original choice, but as I had taken my yellow Jackson Cage sign with me again, I finally decided to try to get as close to the stage as possible.

Lazy, fun day was spent mainly outside Ullevi with other folks in the pit line. It was very warm, but luckily cloudy and so the temperature was tolerable. As there were no shows in Finland this year, numerous Finns had traveled here as this was the closest city to host a show. While we sat on the sidewalk beside Ullevi, several dozen guys we knew strolled by during that day. I had nice chats with fans from other countries too, and even with Graham, Bruce's security guy.

We got to the pit after a strict but very well handled security check about 3 hours before show time. First hour was nice as we had room to sit and it was easy to use toilets and get drinking water from taps. Hmm, there are yellow and blue papers on many seats, will there be a tifo? But then already about two hours before show time there was a pit rush, and we got quite tightly packed and had to stand. Not nice, as it was hot and my legs soon started to protest. Luckily some of us managed to make a little room and we sat again down, and stood up only about ten to eight, the announced show time.

Tonight Bruce made us to wait. Lighting rig men were already there just like cameraman, but no band. Handclaps (Icelandic style), the famous Swedish sports audience shouts (about is the other part of the arena ready) and finally, after several attempts, a wave started and went several times around the arena. Then, half an hour late, there they come! Yay! Oh, look at Bruce's face, he looks so happy and surprised - and oh, what a tifo! All the seats are now yellow and blue, and form huge words WELCOME HOME BRUCE E STREET. What a sight!

Bruce admires this marvel for a while, and then the band launches Meet Me in the City. This is so good, I really wished to hear this! No matter what comes after this, the night is already good! Everything is all right now. And yes, I'm so often quite slow and dense, and so what came next was a total surprise for me: Bruce announced that now they will play the whole River album from start to finish! OMG, I didn't dare to expect that I would ever hear it! We are going to hear all those songs today, oh oh OH! I'm so excited!

The Ties That Bind - after these years, listening to this music and travelling to these shows, there really are ties that bind me to Bruce and E Street Band. And there are nowadays also tight ties that bind me to the people surrounding me right now, my dear traveling companions, my blood brothers. But no time to think about that right now, now we all just raise our hand and yell happily about ties that bi-i-i-i-i-i-ind! This is a happy summer show, let Sherry Darling ride in that car again!

Then my buddy Ile next to me reminds me to grab quickly my sign, as now it is time for Jackson Cage and although it naturally isn't a request tonight, I can anyway show proudly my sign around for few moments and then put it back to floor for the rest of the show. The song I have wanted to hear for so many years and every time I have missed it, but now, finally, I am in the right place at the right time! I'm happy, and I hope that Samuel and Nicolas on my sign are happy too as they can now retire.

Independence Day already puts tears in the eyes of numerous people around me, while I just feel happy and enjoy this ride. This is not your normal Bruce show, this is something very different. The band doesn't just run through these River songs, but each one of them gets a special treatment just suitable for its mood. The moods vary from happy romping around (with some interaction with audience) to very sad, slow ballads. This is a perfect, well timed performance, and that's probably why the show started so late, Bruce had to concentrate to find the right mood to do this so that even at this sold out, vast stadium (over 60 000 spectators) he can get everyone to follow. You can trust that is someone can do this, it is Bruce Springsteen. And Ullevi really is the place to try this with this dedicated audience.

Two Hearts and You Can Look with Steven, lots of funny faces and nice sharing of vocals. Out in the Street takes me back to 2008 and to this very place, when I was standing in this exact point (well, perhaps it was a meter or two further back, and maybe few inches left), when I heard this and realized that it was a song just for me because I had just quitted a shitty job and was free to do whatever I wanted, including getting a last minute ticket and travelling to my very first Bruce & E Street Band show ever. (D'oh, everyone else has some wonderful, life changing stories about certain Bruce songs which deep, meaninful lyrics, like xxx helped me during a divorce and yyy is special because something about losing a parent or stuff, and then "my important song" is Out in the Street...)

I Wanna Marry Tou starts with a longish story about it being the first love song Bruce has written, and has a long part of unreleased Here She Comes Walkin' as an intro. Ah, what a treat! Then it is time for The River, and again Bruce lets audience sing some verses of it and do some of the mm-mm-mm parts in the end while he provides just the falsetto over audience singing. Everybody knows the lyrics, everybody gets the mood as Bruce conducts pit folks and points his mic to the audience. What a strong performance! After it there is a pause while the record is changed, and the audience spontaneously starts the mm-mm-mm again beautifully. There is so much love in the air tonight. And listen to Garry's red semi acoustic Guild bass, I'm so in love with it! (Is it legal to love a bass?)

Point Blank with its magnificient piano intro sounds stronger than normally, especially after that pause made people even more receptive to a song like this. Tonight nobody shouts "play rock and roll!" during quiet moments, but everyones breaths in unison with this performance. And during happy moments, like following Cadillac Ranch and I'm a Rocker, everybody is again ready to sing and dance just to be quiet again during Fade Away. No Bruce, you don't fade away no matter how the clock keep ticking, you can trust us to keep you here with us always.

By now I am already crying and listening to Stolen Car next doesn't help that much. Ramrod again turns the mood into happy dancing and hopping around, let's ramrod! Bruce and Jake jumping and dancing too, and then everybody on the stage gathering together to wiggle their black-clad butts! Fun, fun, fun! Then Price You Pay, which was the definite highlight for me tonigt, if I have to pick just one song. This one is just so perfect and beautiful, and if you were not there, you can't even imagine how it sounded when the audience was taking part and singing the instrumental parts between the verses.

Drive All Night with a long interlude including lines from Dream Baby Dream was fantastic, and during Wreck on the Highway I just swayed from side to side, wept and wondered why I never learn to take enough tissues to these shows. But who could have thought (well, many others than me could) that we would really get all of the River tonight? Every song, every mood, everything performed so perfectly and with all the scale of emotions a normal human being can handle was used tonight. Superb.

Bruce and part of the band bowed, but that was that, Bruce just kept on going quickly after few short words. Badlands, The Promised Land - we were now back to your scheduled program. But these were the songs the majority of the audience (well, me included) wanted also to hear and needed to hear, no reason to complain. besides, there was Candy's Room! Because The Night! LOHAD! Guitar solos, hands in the air, singing along! No encore break of any kind, but the lights were lit at some point (no idea when, before BitUSA or BTR perhaps?) and this train just kept moving on. Seven Nights to Rock, Dancing in the Dark - a sign said "My wife promised me I can FIDDLE with SOOZIE" and he got to the stage, as well as a lady got there to dance with Jake while Bruce had two young boys making faces with him and mimicking his moves with guitars.

The party just continued with 10th Ave turning into a long Shout with all the hands in the air, and after it Bruce walked down to the middle catwalk, wiped his sweaty face with a towel somebody prosented and continued to take a huge sheet saying STADIUM BREAKER. We are in Sweden, we all know what this means! The song which broke this very stadium 31 years ago was Twist and Shout, and now Bruce wants to do it again! He makes us all jump in unison, and oh, look at the screens! All the floor is jumping, and everybody even at the seats are jumping too! Ha ha, we all really can do this, no legs are hurting right now (although some might be quite soon)!

The band bows, Bruce thanks the audience and promisingly says that "We'll be seeing you", and that was that, no extra acoustic song. But then Twist and Shout is the way to end a show in Sweden, especially at Ullevi, and how happy this all left us instead of the slightly sad feeling after an acoustic solo ending. We were riding such an emotional roller coaster during that show, especially the River part, that it is better to have just pure fun in the end.

Now it was important to quickly find friends to hug (easy, there are so many familiar faces around) and grab a beer with this extended family. This was the last show on this tour for most of us, and this was the perfect way to end a tour, to get to listen all of the River album right here. What else can a fan hope for? Well, more tours in future, a show in Finland, another cold beer but right now, I was all satisfied. Thank you Bruce, thank you E Street Band, thank you all of my dear friends.

Yhtään omaa tämän kiertueen keikkaani en vaihtaisi mistään hinnasta pois, ja me tältä kiertueelta mahtavia elämyksiä saaneet olemme kyllä todella etuoikeutettuja.

Se vain vähän jäi lauantai-iltana jälkikäteen harmittamaan, etten ehtinyt jäädä ryhmäkuviin pittiin, ruumiilliset tarpeet melkein kuuden tunnin seisomisen jälkeen tulivat väliin. ;)
Mutta ensi kiertueella sitten!

Kiitos Liisa hienosta kirjoituksesta!

Mieli on tänään haikeana kun ollaan taas "Back in loma-arjessa", mutta onneksi on THL- foorumi!

Minä taas näin Grahami laulavan The Promised landissä joten taisi olla hyvä keikka.

The Price to pay oli minullekin skooppikeikan kohokohtia Point Blankin ohella.

Upea päätös myös omalta osaltani upealle The River 2016 kiertueelle (Albany – Kööpenhamina – Rooma – Göteborg).

Tunteikkampina hetkinä Riveriltä Indepence day Roomsassa yleisön hyräillessä tulikärpäsmeressä, Point Blank kaikilla keikoilla, Fade Away ja Price you paid Göteborgissa sekä erityisesti Wreck on highwayn päätös sanat sekä Albanyssa että Göteborgissa; and you realize, there is a limited amount of time, to do your work, to raise your family, and to trying to do something good, and to trying to do something… good.

Brucen ilmoitus koko The Riverin soitosta aiheutti ihan ensin vain sellaisen ”No tulee ainakin Jackson Cage, River ja Point Blank, ihan jees” –fiiliksen.

Yksi tällainen minulle on ”Atlantic City” ja lauantaina samaan kastiin liittyi alkuspiikin sisältänyt ”I Wanna Marry You”.

Lopetus ”Twist and Shoutilla” oli pelkkää riemua.

Vaikka keikka päättyi tuttuihin sanoihin: ”We´ll be seeing you”, niin kyllähän sitä miettii kaikenlaista.
